Carbamide Peroxide vs. Hydrogen Peroxide: What's The Difference?

All professional grade teeth whitening products contain either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, which is the bleaching (or stain removing) agent.

Both hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are effective whitening agents. Hydrogen peroxide (HP) is a very strong bleaching agent that rapidly penetrates tooth enamel to lift stains. Carbamide peroxide (CP) breaks down into hydrogen peroxide first in order to lift stains. Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide have a 1:3 ratio. For example, a product with 30% carbamide peroxide has about 10% hydrogen peroxide.

Does One Work Better Than The Other?

No! The good news is that carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide both produce the same outstanding results. A study published in Journal of the American Dental Association showed that while carbamide peroxide appeared to produce slightly more dramatic results at first, ultimately products containing equivalent amounts of carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide produced exactly the same results.

Sensitivity

Both hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide produced equally brilliant results. However there is a noticeable difference in sensitivity when using a hydrogen peroxide compared to carbamide peroxide product.

Hydrogen peroxide should only be used in a controlled environment under dental supervision due to extreme gum irritation and hyper tooth sensitivity. carbamide peroxide can be used at home without dental supervision; however, it is recommended to consult with the dentist first.

Shelf Life

Products with carbamide peroxide have a slightly longer shelf life than those with hydrogen peroxide, although when refrigerated, all peroxide products have an increased shelf life.

Difference Between Gel Concentrations

The type of gel plus the concentration of the gel are what determine the effectiveness, potential for irritation or tooth sensitivity, how long results last, and how often it can be used.

Carbamide peroxide is the safest gel to use for home teeth whitening. Most home whitening kits and pens contain 22% to 44% carbamide peroxide gel with 35% being the standard.
